WhatsApp was founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum in 2009, former employees of Yahoo!.later on mark zuckerberg ,owner of facebook bought it.so this messeasging app is quite famous. its free and also ad free atleast in my country india.

 Why people use whatsapp alternatives 
those alternatives app give some modification 
1) very less features are avaliable in real whatsapp as compared to its alternatives.
2) it allows you to download ones status ,which is not possible in whatsapp.
3) it allows you to hide your view from theirs status

 Why you should not use whatsapp alternatives
here one thing should be clear that we are talking about alternatives like gbwhatsapp, whatsapp plus and all those modified version i may not know. and not apps like telegram hike and all that.

 1) for security reasons - well you just cant trust any other application , if we talk about whatsapp it is a brand .if it will do something wrong then it can took up to the court but talking about others you cant do anything 
even facebook leaked the data of its user so how you can trust these third parties app.

 maybe your bank details can be in danger.
